So first things first – I’m NEWO, a photographer based down in Essex, UK (previously Yorkshire), working mainly in producing alternative editorial images. I’ve been doing this for a couple of years now and when I was asked if I would like to do a short guest blog post, I was delighted! One of the things that people compliment my work on the most is the styling, and without working with like-minded creatives to put these looks together, I’m sure I wouldn’t enjoy the process of creating images as much as I do!

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with a number of amazing designers along my way, and am lucky enough to have been involved in makeup work previously, so it was fairly easy to put together outfits and looks that stood out in the way I wanted them to and created an aesthetic character. One of the things that I’ll be the first to admit I’m rubbish at though is hair. I’m genuinely terrible. If I can do a single plait I’m very impressed with myself… I found that some of the looks I was putting together for shoots felt like there was something missing, and soon came to realise that sometimes without the same fantastical hair to go with the outfit, the makeup, the image itself. I wanted colours and height and to add another layer of fantasy. Sometimes, using the model’s natural hair is absolutely the way to go, but I know firsthand how being able to change into a totally different character for a shoot is such an amazing experience.

I’d shot with a couple of different wigs previously, but really wanted to work in conjunction with a wig company like I do with other designers on a more ongoing basis. This is where I got in touch with Hair By MissTresses, who I actually first saw when I came across their stand at Whitby Goth Weekend, there was a gorgeous yellow number (yellow is one of my all time favourite colours) and I ended up shooting with a couple of wigs from their DollsHead wigs range.

In particular, I have shot the yellow Snooki in a couple of different ways, here's how:

[1] To add a pop of colour in a jewel tone setup with this amazing jewelled mask. I love how the pink, yellow and blue all stand out, and I added a bit of a yellow gelled backlight to really make the yellow stand out even more.

[2] For another shoot, I left the wig quite tousled, and went for a rock and roll vibe, with a studded leather jacket, using the yellow as inspiration for a ‘stagelight’ yellow background.

[3] I then shot again, but this time for a very simple headshot, keeping the wig very sleek and straight, using it to frame the model’s face and bring out her wonderful makeup and the jewellery she was wearing.

What I love is that for each of these three different setups, the finished look would not have been as complete or striking without this amazing vivid yellow – and there are still lots of styling options I have in the back of my head for use in more concepts!!minded creatives to put these looks together, I’m sure I wouldn’t enjoy the process of creating images as much as I do!
